Changes to planning application representations - 3-9 April 2024

From 3 to 9 April 2024, we will be installing a new Planning and Building Control system.

During this time you can still see planning applications and make application submissions on the Planning Portal, but no new submissions will be visible on the council webpages.

If you want to make a representation on a planning application, send it to planning@islington.gov.uk or post it to: Planning Department, Community Wealth Building, Islington Town Hall, London, N1 2UD.

We're sorry for any inconvenience.

Easter service changes

During the Easter period, some of our services will be operating slightly different hours. Our council’s bin collection schedule will change for one week starting on Friday 29 March to make sure everyone’s waste is picked up around the bank holiday.

See the full schedule and your amended rubbish and recycling collection dates and other service changes including parking and library opening times over the Easter period.

Building Control

A new Building Control regime came into force on 1 October 2023. See our technical and legal updates for more details.

Building Control makes sure:

  • all buildings meet Building Regulations
  • to establish functional standards for building design and construction to improve the health and safety of people in and near buildings.

As well as health and safety, Building Regulations support energy efficiency in buildings and help meet the needs of people with disabilities.

Building Control also oversees other aspects of construction including:

  • controlling demolition
  • licensing temporary and special structures
  • dealing with dangerous structures.

Islington Council Building Control has powers to enforce Building Regulations 2010.

What Building Control does

Building Control works with designers, architects, contractors, fire services and our planning department to help you complete your building project to a high standard.

  • We provide efficient, value for money, statutory building control service for work within Islington
  • As a non-profit, local organisation, we can offer competitive rates and a vast knowledge of local issues.
  • We have a high level of competency supported by ISO 9001 and decades of experience in the sector.
  • Our staff are affiliated to the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) and we are represented as a member of the London District Surveyors Association (LDSA). As a member of LABC, we are able to partner with other local councils to offer a nationwide service, registered details approval and warranties to suit a range of situations.
  • Our public status means you can be sure of an accountable and thorough service.

General building control advice service

Our surveyor can provide basic informal advice on building control matters for local residents, homeowners and businesses. You will need to provide your name and the address of your property. This service is usually available on Tuesdays between 1pm and 5pm.

The Management System of Islington Council Building Control has been approved by Alcumus ISOQAR and is compliant with the requirements of ISO 9001: 2015
