Libraries

How to get the most out of libraries, your local safe space where you can borrow books and use other resources.

Public libraries are a safe and welcoming place for everyone. They are really good for finding help and information about local services as well as allowing you to borrow books and to use computers for free. You will find kind and caring staff at libraries who will be on hand to help you.

You can find out where your nearest library is on the GOV.UK website. This will take you to your nearest library which will have its own website and information about their services and opening times.

Libraries offer online services which can be accessed from computers or mobile devices, away from the library building. Visit the local library in your area to request a library card and you will be given information on how to find:

  • Books, audiobooks, ebooks
  • eMagazines and eComics, and eNewspapers
  • Films and music
  • Information about online learning
  • Computers and printing facilities
  • Wi-Fi access for those with devices already.

Libraries can also provide support for people who need help with computer and internet skills, and those who have access needs such as vision and print impairments.

At the library you will find comfortable seating and a place to relax, and a range of free activities including:

  • family activities for babies and children under five
  • activities for school-aged children and young people
  • reading groups
  • cultural and social activities.

Library staff can also signpost users to information and / or organisations about:

  • how to access free NHS healthcare
  • education, schools and support for children and families
  • housing
  • Universal Credit
  • support for finding employment
  • information about citizenship
  • English language lessons
  • bereavement support.

Reading materials are available in languages other than English including eNewspapers from over 100 countries. Translation and audio software can help library users access reading in the language they need.

Islington Libraries have purchased a collection of books in Ukrainian that we hope you are able to make use of. The books include a collection of fiction books for adults as well as several children’s books. You can find out more on our library webpages.

You can also download a free app provided by Odilo where you can find thousands of free Ukrainian eBooks and audiobooks. These have been designed to help support Ukrainians with a range of free reading, listening, learning and entertainment for both children and adults.
